We work closely with the Insurance Company and the homeowner. After a fire, it is evident that you would have to take steps to determine what you could potentially salvage. Yet, this is not exactly the topic we are going to want to cover here. There are other different scenarios where you could potentially end up with smoke damage. Without a major fire, it is not uncommon to see smoke damage occurring in kitchens and BBQ areas. The main issue we tend to see is these areas are not properly taken care of and can be the reason why major fires actually develop.

How We Deal with Smoke Damage

Many times occupants will need to be away from their home while we clean, treat, and deodorize the structure. First of all, we put an air scrubber in the structure to pull the particulates out of the air while we treat, clean and deodorize. In most cases the structure can be cleaned. The air ducts and HVAC system will also have to be cleaned. Contents are a big factor in this and sometimes need to be taken off premises to be cleaned and itemized. We keep records of non-salvageable and salvageable contents. What is able to be cleaned, we clean. That will sometimes include the attic space. Odor control is a big part of smoke remediation. We use a combination of hot thermal fogging, which is a dense fog. The chemical inside the fog is designed to kill the smoke odor molecule. We fog the whole structure including the air duct systems, along with an ionizer. Dealing with smoke damage, odor control is a huge part of the process.


Repairs

Before we meet with the adjuster, most of the demolition and mitigation should be complete and ready for the rebuild process. We meet with the adjuster and go over the scope of the work. The adjuster writes an estimate and we work from this estimate. If something is missed on the original scope of work, it can be added at the end of the claim. Proper documentation of the damage is essential for the insurance to cover the loss. After the insurance company has approved and sent the funds for the project, the repairs can begin.
